This is a long one, get comfortable.....
Let's start with the elephant in the room.
V1416 - Guy Laroche | Blouse - what I am calling "the mariachi shirt".
The inspiration for the Guy Laroche Fall 2013 collection was Marlene Dietrich so it makes sense that there were a lot of tie neckband blouses, high waisted trousers and draped dresses. Clearly, these clothes were made for the 6 foot, 110 lb woman, especially considering those "heavy", voluminous sleeves that only that particular body type can pull off.
This is a HARD blouse on unbalanced proportions, period, I think chiffon (pictured left) or a very lightweight cotton like voile is the best fabric option, anything else would be too heavy.
V1415 - The Tom and Linda Platt Top
I was truly underwhelmed by this top, I don't know if you can recall seeing Butterick 6058 that was released in their Summer 2014 collection.
I would pick the butterick pattern hand over fist because it is made out of a knit - better drape and easy to sew.
That shiny cowl knit tunic just looks like I will need therapy after I'm done sewing it. Could you imagine? You can't make a bad stitch, every prick of the needle will show.
And why do they always re-vamp patterns and release them back to back?
The Mccalls company is always doing this and I have no idea why.
Absolutely No $3.99 for you on this one, stop it!
V1417 - Donna Karan | The All in One Sweater
Donna Karan Fall 2013 collection was an updated twist on her original "seven easy pieces" concept that iconized her brand in the eighties. As seen here, it was all about the staple pieces in neutral colors that can be mixed and matched to create "luxe" looks.
The bodysuit/scarf is an illustration of that. This is so "New York City", for anyone that have lived there knows, women running around in all black, sweater with matching oversize scarves, ponchos, capelets is typical cold weather street wear.
I like the idea of it, but of course, fabric choice is key, I wouldn't even attempt it unless I got a knit that had the right weight and texture because it will look "cheap" if made out of something flimsy.
But it would be super chic played down with some jeans and booties or up with some well fitting trousers.
V1409 - Donna Karan | Velvet Sheath
The next pattern from Donna Karan Fall 2013 was Look 14:
The original dress is made out of velvet, sheer jersey and leather - a lot going on right?
I thought it was stunning with the "sheer sleeves" because velvet and leather are "heavy" fabrics and the contrast made with the addition of the sheer fabric balanced off the whole look - gorgeous!
The dress used for the Vogue patterns photo shoot has different sleeves but is still a winner in my opinion - more realistic. This would be fun to make. I love to see the pieces coming together.
V1407: DKNY | Cross Front Houndstooth Dress
I wrote about this dress when I did the DKNY Fall 2013 post last September. It was not featured on the runway but a lot of magazines featured it. I loved it immediately. So I was pleasantly surprised to see it in this line up and will be getting it for sure.
V1408 - DKNY | The fit and flare dress.
Was also part of the DKNY Fall 2013 collection but was not on the runway as seen on the vogue patterns model.
I like the design lines and I'm very happy Vogue pattern chose to release only a couple fit and flare dresses in this collection in constrast to their Fall 2013 collection.
Even though its a beautiful design, I would have loved to see a pattern for Look 3 or Look 15 because that sportwear style sheath is what's hot right now yet timeless because they are a raglan and crew neck sheath.
V1406 - Rachel Comey | Midi Dress
I was initially excited to see this dress because I loved it on the model and wrote a post about the Rachel Comey Fall 2013. I was devastated to see the fabrics used: Crepe de Chine, Charmeuse, Heavy Georgette
Fitting Issues Magnet.
Looking at the runway photo I thought it was made out of a knit because of the fit. Very disappointing.
V1405 - Tracy Reese | Dolman Sleeve Dress
I haven't seen this one before, if you know which collection it is from, please let me know. The silhouette kinda reminds me of Vogue 8825 which I made a couple years ago and because of that reason, I am not WOW'd by it. Its cute and looks like an easy sew.
V1404 - Ralph Rucci Empire | Waist Dress
This dress came from the Ralph Rucci Spring 2013 Collection. Its a beautiful dress. I love the pocket detail and his take on the fit flare dress trend of last year. Lifting the waistline but keeping the trumpet skirt silhouette was refreshing on the runway.
V1419 - Ralph Rucci | Coat
This was from his Pre Fall 2013 collection which was an awesome collection on the whole. I thought it was fanastic that the "opening" look from the collection was the one they chose to put in the vogue fall collection. Great pick!
I can't wait to see it sewn up, This silhouette is too overhelming for my proportions so I'm going to have to live vicariously through someone's finished garment.
V9040 - The Christian Dior Inspired Coat
I smiled when I saw this, I knew I had seen it before but I couldn't remember what collection. Christian Dior Fall 2013, of course.
Obviously its not an exact replica but it is pretty darn close.
The Lynn Mizono patterns
I have never made them but I enjoy seeing them sewn up. They are in the "artwear" sewing pattern category and have a cult following. I absolutely love that japanese, origami draping design style of patterns like V1410.
I am not a fan of V1413 though, I'm sure its well drafted but its just too much! Looks like she thought something was missing and just added more ruffles to the design. Not to mention, the relentless peplum. I just want to take a scissors and chop of that hanging ruffle - messy!
V1412 - Rebecca Taylor Blouse Patterns
I'm definitely going to get this pattern because I like her shirts/top. The last one I made was V1387 View A (Finished photos) which I wear all the time
I think it was a great collection.
I know, you wouldn't get that from all I shade I dished out but there were alot of good picks.
I would say the designer patterns were mostly for collecting, like that Dior inspired and Ralph Rucci Coat. The DKNY and Donna Karan is more figure flattering.
I would say, my money is on the Easy Vogues, much more wearable in terms of my lifestyle and body type.
Thanks to Sharion for letting me that the collection was out.
And I hope you enjoyed the review.
